Dowries are of two kinds. In one case Bridegroom pays certain amount to the Bride’s family. Second one goes the other way; Bride’s family gives some amount to the Bride.
In Telugu the first one is called KanyaSulkam, where usually a rich old man used to buy a bride from a poor family for his own reasons. Thanks to the reforms and initiatives of erstwhile British rulers and few Indian Greats like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Kandukuri Veresalingam Panthulu etc., because of which this has almost been eradicated from the society these days.
Senond one VaraKatnam : This is the form of dowry we are aware of today. We see and read about many incidents happening around us, where the lady will be harassed to bring more money from their parents often leading to some undesirable consequences.Ok leave about all those minuses. I personally attribute the financial state of the family is the main reason behind this(of course the character of the gent to come extent). Now things seems to be changing. Men and Women are competing right from School, College to jobs. The IT and ITES trend has changed the scenario. During the last decade the average middle class family people started their journey towards the high class. This is changing the their attitudes. Money is no longer the primary concern to at least some of them. If you are one of them or if you are looking for one of them, I have news for you here. Here comes a portal called idontwantdowry ,where you can express your view and find like-minded people there.
